Our End of the Year Letter

Dear Family,

This has been a very full year for us. We have experienced many blessings and challenges that have turned into blessings. We are grateful for the the knowledge we have of the Gospel and the love of God that we feel daily. We are also grateful for the love and support we feel from each of you. We have the best family in the world. Here is a little look at our year:

In February, Nashelle turned 23  and got into her first car accident. Thankfully we have two cars so she was still able to make it to work in Santaquin every day. Also, her little brother got home from his mission to Japan. Hooray!

In March, Daniel got a job offer in Vernal to be the Store Manager of a new Cold Stone Creamery. After lots of prayer, we decided to take the job and started looking for places to live and Nashelle started doing her own job-hunting.

In April, Nashelle got a job offer from the Uintah School District to teach 1st grade. We also found out that we were expecting our first child. So, Nashelle decided to not take the teaching job and our criteria for housing changed.
Also in April, Daniel graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Economics. We are thrilled that we are both finished with school (at least for now until Daniel decides about a Masters). We love not having to go to school - especially buying books or paying tuition. Graduating is the best.

We expected Daniel to begin work at Cold Stone in May. However, he didn't and was able to spend lots of time with Nashelle being emotional and first-trimester pregnant which she really appreciated during her last month of teaching school. Daniel also turned 25 years old and did lots of packing as we got ready to move to Vernal.

We lived with Nashelle's parents during the month of June as we waited for the duplex we were planning to rent to become available in July. Daniel did work on Cold Stone, trying to get it open as soon as possible & Nashelle spent her evenings helping with the community musical. We had an ultrasound and found out that our baby was a girl. We also met Donna Young and decided that we would do a home birth & started doing a Hypnobabies home-study course.
We celebrated our 2nd anniversary in August, and then the next three months flew past as we waited for our baby to come in November.

Hannalyn Jackson was born at 11:06 AM at our home in Vernal on November 30. She was 7 pounds and 19 1/2 inches long. One week after she was born, we had to take her to Primary Children's Medical Center. We were there for 10 days and had lots of meetings with specialists & tests done on Hannalyn with the result of us finding that she had laryngomalacia (a very tight airway that made it hard for her to breathe while eating) and having a supraglottoplasty (surgery in her throat to open the airway) to fix it. We came home with Hannalyn and a feeding tube through her nose until she is able to swallow safely and are very grateful to be home with our little one.

It has been a very unexpected year. We have been very blessed and have felt the Spirit of the Lord guiding and directing us every day. We are confident that we are in the place we are supposed to be and doing what we should be doing. It is this assurance that helps us to stay positive despite the crazy things that have happened. We are grateful for the prayers that have been said in our behalf and for the angels that are family & friends to help us in many ways.

We love you & hope that you have had a wonderful year. May the next bring you every happiness.

Love,
Daniel, Nashelle, & Hannalyn

Book Review: Ruby's Secret

When I saw this book was about a 62-year old woman, I wondered if I would be able to relate. I was thrilled to find that I could relate to Ruby on many levels. It was a wonderful story that taught me to find the strength inside of myself. I was reminded that, while I don't need someone else to complete me, having someone to share life with makes you and them better. Ruby's Secret is beautifully written and has a message that will touch any reader of any age.

I loved it. It was a marvelous read and I would recommend it to anyone. :)

Ruby's Secret is part of The Newport Ladies Book Club Series. You can find other books in this series by clicking on the links in the left sidebar.

The Silent Night Experience

While we were at Primary Children's Hospital we had a number of incredible experiences. One of them revolved specifically around our special song Silent Night.

We were getting ready to go to surgery and Hannalyn was miserable. Beyond miserable, really. She hadn't been allowed to eat for 5 hours and she was tired on top of that. Plus, I think that she could tell that Daniel & I were stressed and a little bit scared. Hannalyn was screaming and nothing we did could calm her. She wouldn't take her binky, we couldn't pick her up because of the tubes she was connected to, and just talking to her wasn't doing it.

I was signing paperwork and Daniel was doing all he could to soothe her before we said goodbye and I had the thought to say, "Sing her her song." Daniel started singing Silent Night to Hannalyn & the effect was immediate. She didn't stop crying completely, but it went from enraged screaming to whimpering. She looked for Daniel's voice and listened very intently. It was so touching. When nothing else could help, singing Silent Night did.

I am so grateful & we feel so blessed. And I cry every time I hear Silent Night. :)

Laryngomalacia & Supraglottoplasty

For those of you who don't know, Daniel & I took Hannalyn to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City when she was one week old. We took her because she was having bloody diapers and we were worried about the amount of blood she was losing.

To make a long story short, after we had been at the hospital for a few days, we learned that Hannalyn had laryngomalacia. That means that the folds of her epiglottis in her airway were overlapped making it hard for her to breathe. Because she couldn't breathe, she stopped eating - resulting in dehydration & bloody diapers. The doctors said that laryngomalacia is common. Most children grow out of it, but there are some that need to have surgery to repair it. Hannalyn was one of those children. Hannalyn had a surgery called a supraglottoplasty. The doctor took a scope and some little scissors and went into her throat and cut off some of the skin to open up her airway so she can breathe and eat.

We were at Primary Children's for a total of 10 days - 4 days to rehydrate Hannalyn, lower her sodium levels, & get her stabilized; 2 days to diagnose the laryngomalacia and operate on it; 1 day of meeting with a bunch of doctors to decide what she needed next; 2 days (the weekend) waiting for the weekend to be over and people to come back to work so she could take her last test; and the last 2 days doing the last test and then getting trained on a feeding tube that we had to bring home.

This is a very brief synopsis of what happened over those ten days. However, we had many incredible & spiritual experiences while we were at the hospital. I want to share some of these experiences with you, but needed to give you a little history so that you will understand what was going on.

For the record, we are home and doing great. We do have to feed Hannalyn through a tube that goes through her nose to her stomach, but it is temporary until she has recovered from her surgery. We will return to Primary Children's at the end of January for her to take a swallow test & hopefully have the tube removed for good. :) We are very optimistic that everything will go great and she will be healed, strong, and 'pass' her test.

Thanks for the prayers that were said on her behalf while we were at the hospital and for the prayers that we continue to feel strengthening us every day. We cannot fully express our gratitude for your love. It lifts & builds us. Thank you.

Christmas Dress

Oh  my goodness. I just love this little girl. :)

According to Daniel's Phone...

our life is awesome & busy & fun & exciting! Of course. ;) How could it not be when we do such incredible things. Like...

eat delicious food at Los Hermanos for birthday celebrations,

go to the temple, and to Big-O Tires.

It gets more exciting when we paint picnic tables & go to movies,

get new glasses & go to the temple again,

and go on walks & eat more good food - this time prepared by Daniel.

And you can't deny that life is awesome when you go to the temple for the last time before the baby comes, watch your hubby snuggle with your mom's cat,

realize that your hubby & your sister are wearing matching outfits, go into labor early in the morning,

and have a baby!

Clearly, this means life is pretty great. :)

And we are SO excited for Christmas!!!
Happy Monday!

The After Story

Pregnancy Story
Birth Story

My birthing time (labor) was from 2:30 AM when I started timing contractions and they became regular to 11:06 AM when Hannalyn was born. 8 ½ hours from start to finish. All that with a slipped cervix. I found out later that I was only dilated to 2 cm when Donna did the first internal exam and discovered that the cervix wasn’t in alignment with everything else. However, after she got it back in the place it was supposed to be, it only took me about an hour to dilate to 10 cm. Only an hour! I am kinda bummed that we didn’t discover the slipped cervix earlier - I wonder if it would have made the total time only 4 hours. Oh well. No use wondering about what might have been. Giving birth was the most amazing thing I’ve ever experienced. I am very proud of myself for sticking with what I wanted and what I believed in from the very beginning. I had a wonderful experience and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. It was exactly what I wanted.

Funny enough, when I visualized my birth, I always visualized it with Hannalyn coming at about 11 AM. For some reason, I had that in my head as the perfect time for her to be born and surprise! She was and it was. Something to think about.

The next couple of hours after Hannalyn was born were filled with some of the usual things that happen after a baby is born, as well as maybe a few unusual things. I was able to nurse her and the three of us got some quality alone time. She was weighed and measured and everything else - 7 pounds, 19 ½ inches long, and healthy in every other way. Daniel loved being able to help. He got to measure how long she was and how big her head was even. I loved watching him be so involved.

I was so impressed with everyone. Donna was very supportive and explained everything she was doing and why. That didn’t really surprise me - it’s how she works and one of the reasons we love her. She also showed us how to clear out Hannalyn’s airways. Hannalyn was still having a little trouble breathing because of the gunk she had swallowed, but was overall doing a great job. Lyndsy took some pictures for us and even started the laundry. Then because it was lunch time, Holt made us all some soup (which was amazingly delicious!) I’m sure there were other things going on that I don’t know about. I was in bed and staying there quite comfortably. I was so glad to be in my house in my bed. I didn’t want to get up and move and I was thrilled that my baby was already home with me!

After Donna & the girls left - with strict instructions to me & Daniel and hugs & kisses on the baby - we called my parents and invited them to come over. It was one of the best things I’ve ever witnessed to see my parents hold their first grandchild. They both cried a little (though I know my dad will never admit it) and I did, too. I haven’t seen either of them hold a baby in a long long time and it was so cool to get to watch them with Hannalyn. They were really excited to learn her name since we hadn’t told anyone. I was glad to see that it especially touched my mom. But I’ll tell that story later.

After grandma & grandpa had a good long turn holding her, they called my siblings and had them come over. The girls loved Hannalyn and made several comments about how cute and tiny she is. Megan has never really had a baby (since she was the baby in the family) and watching her first time with my baby was more precious than I can describe. Marinn was just in awe and couldn’t stop smiling and commenting on how cute she is. Taylor was a pro, just like I knew he’d be. I am so glad that Hannalyn was born while he was home from school for the holidays. It would have been a bummer for her to come right after he left. As it was, he got to hold her and cuddle her a little bit. I loved it.

The family left after not too long to let us all get some rest. We did. The three of us napped for about two hours. It was glorious. After we woke up, Parker came over to meet Hannalyn. He also commented a lot about how little she is. It was amusing to watch him with her - he wasn’t quite sure how to handle her, but she won him over very easily. Not long after that, Daniel’s dad arrived! We had been hoping with all our might that Hannalyn would be here when he was, but we weren’t entirely sure how that would all work out. Turns out that God’s way is always the best way (no surprises there, really) and she was here just in time to welcome her grandpa Jackson out to Vernal. It was so wonderful to have him with us for the weekend and I loved that Daniel especially got to spend so much time with his dad right after becoming a dad himself. We are so blessed.

Everything feels so right and complete. It was the most natural thing in the world to have Hannalyn with us. She doesn’t feel ‘new’. It seems as though she has been a part of our family forever, which, in a way, she has been. Being with Daniel & Hannalyn makes me happier than I ever imagined being. I feel as though everything is good in the world and all the worries we had don’t really matter.

I am so so grateful that Daniel doesn’t have to be at work right now. Knowing that Hannalyn & I had him all to ourselves with unrestricted access for any reason made everything that much sweeter. He has been the best support and given me unending love, devotion, and attention. One of my favorite things about Daniel is that he always goes beyond the extra mile. I never worry about anything when he is around because I know that he is doing everything in his power to keep us all happy and safe. I have been truly impressed with Daniel in his new role as daddy. He has really taken to it and I love that I can feel the love he has for me & Hannalyn pouring out of every part of him.

Hannalyn has already proven to be the best decision we have made. She is the perfect addition to our little family and I am so grateful that she is here. I feel so blessed to know that she is mine and she is mine forever. Our family is sealed together for longer than forever, and that blessing has new meaning to me as I realize just how much my family - our little threesome, and everyone else - really means to me.

Our birthing time was perfect. I feel so powerful and confident in myself and my body. I know without a doubt that Daniel & I made the best decisions for us as we went through first the pregnancy and then birthing our baby. I wouldn’t change anything about what we did or how we did it. Hypnobabies was the perfect tool for teaching me that I can control my body and my mind. Donna’s program strengthened my body so I could birth a beautiful, healthy baby and her encouragement was and is truly a blessing.

I am grateful that God has blessed me so abundantly. He has given me the most wonderful husband, partner, and friend to have by my side continuously. He has blessed the two of us with inspiration so we could be guided to a program and a woman who would make giving birth the perfect experience we wanted. And He blessed us again with a beautiful, sweet little girl to have a part of our lives & our home.

Thank you to those who supported us along the way - family & friends especially. Thank you for loving us and for taking care of us. We love you all so very much.

I love Daniel & I love Hannalyn. Everything feels so right and we have never been happier.

Hannalyn's Birth Story

This is our birth story. It was our experience. I understand that not everyone has had a similar experience or will even if they do the exact same things that we did. I hope that each person reading this remembers that we can create our own experiences - and that is what we did. We had a wonderful birthing time - perfect, fast, easy, and even comfortable (until the last few pushes). I want to share the hope, joy, and growth that I experienced. That is why I have written our story. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Friday, November 29th , I woke up a little discouraged. As part of the Hypnobabies program, I got to visualize my birthing time. I would go in to Hypnosis and, guided by a CD through all the stages of birthing, would visualize exactly how I wanted my birth to go. I would visualize the time of day, where we were, who was there, what we were doing, even the weather outside. It was one of my favorite Hypnobabies Cds because it helped me feel confident in the upcoming birth of my baby. However, when we found out that Daniel’s dad was going to be coming for a visit, I had changed my original visualization day from December 2 to November 29. Now, I knew and still know that hypnosis is mostly suggestions, but the power to create and imagine what we want in our minds is what gives us the power and desire to make those things happen. I knew that it was very unlikely, but I wanted our baby born on the 29th so that she could meet her Grandpa Jackson while he was in town. Plus, it was after Thanksgiving and so she would never have a Thanksgiving birthday - something I had had in mind when picking December 2nd in the first place.

So when I woke up, still wondering if my baby had even dropped into position yet and not having felt any noticeable pressure waves (aka contractions), I was a little discouraged. We had an appointment with our midwife, Donna, and while it was a great appointment and she & Daniel both agreed that the baby had dropped, it was guessed that the baby wouldn’t come for about 7-10 days. Completely missing Daniel’s dad. I had told myself repeatedly that it didn’t matter when the baby came - due dates are definitely guess dates and I wanted her to come when she was ready and God knew that we were ready. I was happy with any day…but was also ready to see her.

The rest of the day was long and rough. I had finished everything on my lists of things to do. I had tried so hard to spread things out so I was only doing one thing a day to take me to when the baby would get here, but I had finally exhausted my list. I am a big fan of waiting until December 1st to get out Christmas decorations, because then December 1st turns into a big party day no matter what day of the week it is and there is Christmas music and fun things going up around the house. But I needed something to take my mind off the waiting and so, with Daniel’s help, we pulled out all the Christmas decorations. We didn’t actually put anything up on the walls, but I went through my boxes and sorted out the stockings, village, and tree decorations so that I could start the next day.

During the afternoon, I was doing my visualization again. I realized that the voice on the CD was talking about a pressure wave and I was suddenly feeling just that - a wave of pressure moving up my abdomen, lingering for a second, and then going back down. It was fascinating. It didn’t last very long and was far from intense, but I had just recognized that I was having a pressure wave and it was very encouraging. I also realized that I had felt that feeling before, but hadn’t realized what it was. I was still a little bummed that the baby wasn’t born yet, but I was also feeling more optimistic that she would come soon.

Daniel & I spent the evening at my parent’s house. Everyone was gone except for my littlest sister, so we hung out - watching a movie (UP - yes I cried) and cuddling and talking. I was exhausted and a little grumpy when my parents got home from the movie theatre at 10:30, and so instead of staying later and hanging out longer I made Daniel take me home and I went straight to bed.

That was divine inspiration, my friends, have no doubt about it.

Saturday, November 30th, I woke up about 12:30 AM to pressure in my abdomen. I was excited that I was having another pressure wave, but knew it probably didn’t mean anything so I went to the bathroom and went back to sleep.

I woke up again about 1:30 AM to another pressure wave. This time instead of being able to go back to sleep, it took me a little bit to comfortable because I felt another one shortly after. Still thinking it didn’t mean much, I just prayed that I would be able to sleep through the night and not be exhausted in the morning, and went back to sleep.

2:15 AM. I realized that something serious was happening when I felt another pressure wave and it woke me up. I laughed in my mind as I remembered that at our appointment, I had asked how I would know when it was time and Donna’s daughter Holt told me that I would know because I wouldn’t be able to sleep. I debated back and forth for about 10 minutes while lying in bed. I hardly qualified this as not being able to sleep, but I figured it was better to be safe than sorry. I woke up Daniel and told him that I was going out into the living room to time the waves, but it probably wasn’t anything and so he could just go back to sleep. He said “ok” and rolled over.

I woke him up 30 minutes later.

I told Daniel that I had gone into the living room and entered Hypnosis, just like I had practiced, because the pressure waves were not comfortable and I wanted to focus. After timing the first two waves, I was a little surprised, and checked my Hypnobabies paper that gives suggestions on when to go to the hospital/call midwife and so on. I was more surprised. Just to be sure, I timed four more. Sure enough, my pressure waves were lasting about 1 minute each and were about 5 minutes apart. My Hypnobabies paper told me this was a good time to start prepping to make preparations for a birthing time. I was still unsure though, and I knew that Donna was expecting another one of her girls to also give birth any day. It was 3:00 AM!!! What if it was nothing or Donna was with the other girl? I hate making big decisions like this. Thankfully Daniel was given a little jumpstart by God because I told him “1 minute each, 5 minutes apart” and he said, “I’m calling Donna.” And he did.

When Donna answered, Daniel told her that he hoped she wasn’t with another girl and when she said she wasn’t and asked what was going on, Daniel told her my times. Donna told him that she was on her way. When I heard her say that, it took me a second to catch my breath. She felt that it was serious enough to come. That means big things.

Daniel and I kept timing the waves and they got closer together and longer. I was in bed, taking each one at a time and using hypnosis to stay in control. I could tell that things were progressing, but I felt very calm and relaxed and excited. Donna showed up a little after 4 AM and immediately started getting things prepped. I would open my eyes between pressure waves and it was exciting to see supplies being set up and organized. It also made me a little nervous, but Daniel was right by my side the whole time (occasionally working on a sudoku puzzle which I found mildly hilarious throughout) and that helped.

From here on out, I’m not entirely positive about times that things happened. I have asked Daniel for a little clarification here and there, but I was trying to not look at the clock and was a little preoccupied so I don’t remember a whole lot.

As near as we can determine, between 4 and 8 AM, nothing much happened. Donna’s assistant Lyndsy showed up and they finished getting everything ready. This would have been really discouraging to me, but I felt great. I would get up to go to the bathroom about once every hour. I know this because I would check the clock and was always surprised when I noticed that an hour had passed. I started to be bummed around 7 because I recognized that things were taking longer than any of us had expected. We had all thought my birthing time would be 4 hours or less. Easy. This thought was because of all the prep work I had done with Hypnobabies, as well as the diet I was on with Donna’s program that in part helps make birthing times shorter. It wasn’t shorter, and I started to get frustrated.

Daniel was amazing at this point. He kept encouraging me and reminding me that everything was ok. He told me that it didn’t matter how fast things happened, things were progressing they way they were supposed to and the important thing was that we were all ok. He also commented on how fast time was going for him. And really, I felt the same way. Each time I went to the bathroom I was surprised that a whole hour had passed. I felt like it had been minutes and was sick of going to the bathroom. However, an hour had passed each time and that kept me positive.

I also remember looking out into the dining room at one point as I was on my way to the bathroom and saying to Daniel, “Go figure. Even though we wanted it to be clean, our house is a big mess the day of our birthing. Look. Christmas decorations everywhere.”

8:00 AM. (give or take a little bit) (we think) Donna did an internal exam to find out where my body was in preparing to give birth. She knew that I didn’t want to know about how my body was progressing, so she took Daniel into the other room and talked to him about what was going on. When they came back in, Donna told me that my cervix had slipped and so wasn’t dilating like it was supposed to because baby’s head wasn’t pushing on it in the right place. It’s something that is easy to fix, so she moved the cervix into the right place, and then we went back to waiting.

Not once in all this time did I feel anything other than slight pressure. I was a little uncomfortable, but mostly because my muscles were being used over and over and over again and I was getting a little tired. (Like I said - divine inspiration to go to bed when we did otherwise we would have been even more tired and it would have been more difficult to stay focused.) However, I was focused and felt strong and in control. I was also very relaxed and peaceful and so grateful that I could be on my bed and moving around my house if/when I wanted to. It was also quiet. So quiet that it felt like it was still the middle of the night and I had to remind myself that time was really still moving.

sometime in the middle of everything. note the cold stone shirt. i told my dad i would wear it. he didn't believe me. :)

At one point, I commented that I could feel pressure in the tops of my thighs. Donna had Daniel sit by me on the bed and Lyndsy sit on the other side of me and each time I had a pressure wave, they squeezed the muscle at the top of my knee. It was amazing. Each time they did that - I felt nothing in my thigh at all! It eased the pressure in my thigh. A little bit later, Donna joined in at the foot of the bed and would push her knuckle into the middle of my foot - a pressure point for the cervix. Each time she did that, the pressure wave, instead of feeling more intense, would feel similar to the ones at the beginning of the morning - very easy and light. With the help of these three & my hypnosis, the pressure waves were suddenly getting easier. It was the coolest thing.

In fact, I felt so good that I warned everyone that I might start singing Mary Had a Little Lamb and that it was too bad we already knew we weren’t having a Mary because otherwise I might think it was a sign. Everyone laughed at me. But really. I wanted to sing. It was the weirdest feeling I’d ever felt and I’m sure that I sounded crazy, but I wanted to at least give everyone a warning before it actually happened.

An hour after Donna repositioned my cervix, she did another internal exam to see how it had affected my progress. I’m sure this must have been about 9, because I looked at the clock when going to the bathroom (again) and I noticed that Donna had gloved up. This was exciting to me because it meant something serious was happening. I tried to get back to the bed, but stopped at the foot of the bed and went to my knees in the middle of a pressure wave. Donna had her assistants come in (they had been hanging out in the living room - I hope our couch was comfortable) and I told Donna that I wanted to push. Really badly wanted to push. She gave me the go ahead and we got started.

From there on out, things are really vague in my memory. Someone put on the Hypnobabies CD for pushing baby out, and even though I wasn’t really listening, I would catch phrases here and there that would help me. One thing that Hypnobabies encourages during pushing is that all passages and airways stay open and relaxed. If you just relax your jaw and let it hang open, the sound that comes out is “Ahh” like a sigh or yawn. So, I started breathing that way. I got bored though and decided that instead of just breathing “Ahh” I would breathe it out in a song. I started Mary Had a Little Lamb…but changed half-way through to Silent Night. It was relaxing to me on so many levels. I felt closer to God and I knew I was still in control. I would only do it while I was actually pushing. In between pressure waves, I would lean back and breathe to stay in control. I felt kind of silly - pushing out a baby while trying to do phrases of Silent Night - but hey, it worked for me. J

I remember Daniel sometimes being next to me and being behind me for awhile, too. I remember being ridiculously hot and someone putting cool cloths on my forehead and neck. I remember being on the birthing stool for awhile, but wanting to stay fully supported so I could still be in hypnosis and so having Daniel put his hand on my forehead and leaning into him so I wouldn’t have to support myself the whole time. I remember Donna breaking my water and noticing that it was green, meaning my baby had already had a bowel movement. I worried for just a second, but then Daniel said “Relax” and I forgot about it and moved on.

I remember Donna saying, “Look at that hair!” and showing her assistants where baby’s head was starting to show as I pushed. I remember Daniel being told to look and touch her head and him sounding unsure, but excited as he looked and said “Wow” and “Hi baby”. I wanted to cry, but I didn’t. I remember Donna telling me to touch baby’s head and thinking that I really shouldn’t move anything, but I did very briefly and was filled with a new determination to keep going. I also remember them getting a mirror and me taking a quick peek at the hair on baby’s head and being momentarily amazed, but I quickly closed my eyes again to keep in control.

I remember thinking that it was taking forever to push. Especially in comparison with how quickly the hours flew by while I was just sitting in bed with the pressure waves. I wanted to ask how long I’d been pushing, but I didn’t dare. I’m not sure what I would have wanted the answer to be anyway.

The next thing I remember is Donna having Daniel and Lyndsy move me so I was lying on my back. I pushed once and was fine. Suddenly, I lost control as a searing pain hit my tailbone and spread throughout my bottom. I let out a sound that wasn’t really a scream, but was definitely not my “Ahh” that I’d been doing. Donna realized what was happening and talked me back. She started giving me instructions and telling me that she needed me to stay focused. I told her that I needed to move - I couldn’t stay in that position because it hurt and I was losing it. I also remember apologizing a lot for losing it and Daniel & Donna telling me that I hadn’t lost it and was doing great.

Daniel & Lyndsy got me back up on the birthing stool (I hadn’t been on it for a while) and started praying. I still felt like I had lost it and I was starting to have a really hard time focusing. I got scared. So I prayed. I knew that baby’s head had been in the birth canal too long and it needed to come out and I begged God to help me. I started being able to focus on my breathing again, and from there I was able to focus on pushing again. A few pushes later, Donna told me to give the biggest, hardest push I had yet. I did. It felt like that one push lasted forever, but then all of a sudden I felt something large and wet fall out of me. I didn’t notice when baby’s head crowned, but as soon as I recognized that it was her body that I had felt, peace swelled up inside of me. My mind instantly cleared. I thought, “Wow. That was amazing.” And then I instantly looked down at my baby.

She was squirming beneath me. I checked to be sure she really was a girl (my mom & I both had dreams the week before that she was a boy) and then I looked at her face. It was beautiful, with lots of dark hair. I was thrilled and told Daniel that I loved him and we had done it. I was so happy.

It didn’t last long enough, though. Donna immediately started rubbing baby’s chest and hands, flipping her over to get the meconium that she had swallowed out of her. I knew that something was wrong and I froze. I didn’t know what to do. I kept asking if she was ok and everyone kept telling me she would be. Somehow, I got moved to where I was on the foot of the bed and baby was put on my chest. Donna told us to talk to baby. I told my baby how much I loved her and how grateful I was to see her - the whole time wondering if I was about to lose her. I could tell that everyone was moving very fast even though my brain was working very slowly.

Donna told Daniel to give the baby a blessing. My brain only registered that something was wrong and I needed to tell my baby how much I loved her as much as I could while I still could. Daniel reached across and gave the baby a simple perfect blessing. He called her by name, Hannalyn Jackson, and told her to live. Told her to grow up to be with her parents and future siblings. Told her to breathe and be healthy.

I started to sing Silent Night to her - this time with the words and not with “Ahh”. I cried through the song, again praying with God that this wouldn’t be the last time I got to sing Silent Night to her. I was breathing as deeply as I could, and I knew immediately that everything would be ok when half-way through, Daniel started to sing with me. It was the most beautiful thing and most instant affirmation of his support and love that I’ve ever felt. We were singing to our little girl who was still fighting for breath as she laid across my chest and I had never been happier.

Until that first cry.

The cry that Hannalyn let out as she lay there across my chest and Daniel & I finished our song had me bursting into tears and telling her and her Daddy how much I loved them. I said it to each of them back & forth as quickly as I could. I didn’t move or change, but I felt a change. The room didn’t seem to be going quite so fast. Daniel gave me a kiss and I told him that we had done it. It was perfect.

A minute later, Daniel got to cut the cord (which he thought at first that he would never want to do and told me so), and another minute later was holding Hannalyn himself on the other side of the bed as Donna worked to get her breathe more regularly. I stayed where I was and felt like a big wimp as my body birthed the placenta. I told Lyndsy, who was helping me, that I couldn’t believe I had done such powerful pushes while the baby was coming out and now I didn’t want to do gentle pushes to birth the placenta. She gently reminded me that as soon as the placenta was out I could hold my baby again and that gave me a lot of motivation.

It was wonderful listening to Daniel talk to our baby as he held her for the first time. He told her how much he loves her and all the wonderful things I always wanted to hear him say to our baby. He marveled over her hair and her long fingers and toes. He told me all about her and included me in the process, even though I couldn’t really see what was going on. Donna kept remarking how amazing it was that Hannalyn kept looking for her daddy’s voice. Even in the middle of having her mouth suctioned out of all the nastiness that was inside it, she would hear Daniel say something, it would soothe her, and she would turn to look at him. It made me insanely happy & proud to know that my baby knows her daddy’s voice.

I finally birthed the placenta and Donna & Lyndsy moved me to the top of the bed with a bunch of pillows. Daniel handed me Hannalyn and everyone left the room to give us some space for a few minutes. I looked her over and was amazed that such an amazing thing had, just a few minutes before, been inside of me. Now here was our perfect daughter, lying in my arms. All I could do was stare at her until I finally had tears in my eyes, turned to Daniel and kissed him. Hard. I told him that I love him and Wow! Can you believe we just did this? Then I kissed my baby and held her tight and just watched her breathe - grateful for the miracle of life and the power of love.

The Last 10 Weeks

I ended our pregnancy story at 30 weeks. Well, I shouldn’t say ‘ended’, I should say ‘paused’ because it is now ten weeks later and I am going to write about the last ten weeks of my pregnancy.

I don’t know where to start. The last ten weeks have been life-changing in so many ways and areas of my life. They also flew past at reckless speed. How do you adequately describe in mere words and phrases what an experience has meant and how it has completely changed your outlook on life? I wonder if it is really possible…

(30 Weeks)

Hypnobabies has continued to be all the wonderful and good things that it promised at the beginning. I honestly feel as though this program would be beneficial for any woman - whether she wants a ‘natural’ birth or not. There is so much peace that comes from listening to this program and reading the material enclosed. It is empowering as women are reminded that they have the power during their birthing time and can make good choices for themselves. It has helped me recognize that I am strong, smart, and powerful because I know my body best. It reminds me to have faith, hope, and patience that all is going the way that it is supposed to. Hypnobabies is truly an educational program and (while admittedly slightly biased towards natural birth) provides dozens of articles on dozens of topics so that women everywhere can know their options during pregnancy, labor, and even after the baby comes. I love it.

My attitude about birthing has done a complete 180. Instead of being terrified and hoping that it will all end as quickly as possible, I am so excited to give birth and have the experience of bringing a soul sent from Heaven into this world. I know that no matter how prepared I am, there may be things that happen that are unexpected. But that is ok. However my birthing goes, it will be perfect for me and I will be guided by and have the experience that God wants me to have. I feel confident that I will enjoy my baby’s birth completely and I cannot wait for us to share in the miraculous power of that time.

A huge part of my positive attitude has come from working with a wonderful midwife. Donna Young has been 150% supportive of Daniel & me and our choices. She makes us feel like we are the most amazing couple by what she says and how she treats us. We know we can ask her anything at any time and get a straight answer - sometimes more of a detailed answer than we expect. We know that she truly cares about us. In fact, during the last couple of weeks, Donna has called me between appointments just to check up on me and make sure that everything is going alright. I can tell that she really wants our birth to be as perfect, safe, easy, and comfortable as it can be because she doesn’t just wait for our next appointment to talk to us. When she comes to our house, she stays as long as she can and we do all the important baby-checking things, but we also talk and get to know each other. I wish all care providers were this way. I feel 100% safe in Donna’s hands. I know that she will do everything in her power to make sure that there are absolutely no unexpected happenings or complications. I trust her completely - because I know her and I know that she cares about me and my baby.

I am a totally different person now than I was ten weeks ago. I am unrecognizable from 40 weeks ago. I feel as healthy - if not more healthy - than I’ve ever felt in my life. I can do everything that I want to do (except touch my toes) and I enjoy life and being pregnant every single day. Donna’s program has helped to keep my body and mind healthy. I never imagined that being pregnant would feel so good. Donna has told me that I should feel just as good now (in every way) as I ever have before in my life. The best part? I DO! I get a little uncomfortable when I sit in the same position for too long and I wake up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night more frequently than I would like. But I do have another person growing inside of me and resting on my bladder and kicking me in the ribs, so… that is very understandable. It doesn’t make me miserable. In fact, I am more happy knowing that any discomforts I do have are caused by a miracle growing inside of me.

Mentally & emotionally I feel fantastic. Occasionally I have random outbursts of tears - especially lately when I realized that time with Daniel as ‘just us’ is coming very abruptly to a close. And I still sob during any and all movies that I watch. But I feel beautiful and strong and powerful. I am confident in myself and my ability to do anything that I want and need to do. I feel educated and informed and know that I can make my own decisions - no one can make them for me. I am grateful for people who ask me questions about our birthing choices so that I can explain to them why and how we have made our decisions. I am grateful for Donna who answers my questions with more than five words, but tells me why things happen and educates me on my body. I have learned so much - definitely more than I ever learned in school or the doctor’s office. I know more about my body and how it works before, during, and after pregnancy than I’ve ever known before. I am so grateful for that because that knowledge will bless me and my children not just while I’m pregnant, but always.

(35 Weeks)

I sometimes get the feeling that I should be miserable and stressed. In the last ten weeks, the progress we have made in the financial areas of our life has been nil. In the last ten weeks, we have had spiritual and physical and emotional trials that we never expected to go through. We have had to rely on each other, our families, and God more than we ever have in our life. 40 weeks ago, if I knew that these trials were coming and that I would be at the very end of my pregnancy while going through them, I would have had a major mental & emotional break-down. Thankfully, there is a loving Heavenly Father who knew that this would be coming and, instead of warning us, gave us tools to prepare for what was coming. For me, those tools are Hypnobabies - teaching me to calm and control my mind and body in any circumstance and Donna’s program - giving my body the absolute best of the best so that it can function without stress or problems, helping me to be more functional under stress.

My body has changed. My mind has changed. I feel closer to God and Daniel and my true spirit-self than I ever have. Pregnancy has been the greatest blessing as I have learned that I am in control and that I have power over my body, mind, and experiences.

As I mentioned when I wrote our pregnancy story (up to week 30), I have felt a need to put this all down so that others can read it. My purpose is not to brag or say that this is the best and only way to give birth. I believe that women need to choose for themselves how to give birth, and the best way to make a choice is to know your options. That is the reason I have written these thoughts down. Women - know that you have options. Don’t go into pregnancy scared or unsure or feeling as though you have no choice or say in what happens as you give birth. If I could have one thing happen for someone somewhere reading this is that she would feel inspired to figure out her own personal options. Maybe after looking at all the options, this woman wouldn’t change anything about how she goes through pregnancy & birthing. And that is great. Maybe she would make changes. And that is great, too. The point is - this woman would have recognized that she has options and has choices and was able to make the best decision for herself, whatever that decision may be.

Women are so powerful and strong. I have learned so much about my own strength during these last ten weeks and I am so grateful for the new knowledge and insight that I have gained that will bless my life now and always. Pregnancy is a wonderful and beautiful experience that women are blessed to have. It changes us, yes physically, but also spiritually if we allow it.

(40 Weeks)

Again, I have to thank Hypnobabies & Donna Young for helping me create my own best pregnancy experience. Also, Daniel for being with me through it all and giving me strength, unending love, and support on days I thought I couldn’t do it alone any more. And of course, Heavenly Father for guiding me to a blog that put the thought in my mind that I had a choice and then helping me learn and study about what would be best for me and my family and my experience.

Quick Update

Alright.

Life is insane. We are blessed. God is good. I love my family.

There has been so much that has happened in the last week. We had a baby girl, named her Hannalyn, and fell in love. We had visits from Daniel's dad and my brother. Said brother had a birthday. And even more.

I will be posting updates soon. Updates on life and love and happiness. And pictures! Lots of pictures.
I knew I wouldn't be able to stop taking pictures of my perfect baby - and I was right!

I hope to be writing again in a couple of days.

Til then, thanks for the prayers & love.

Thanksgiving & Craftiness

Happy Thanksgiving from us of the red noses! It is really cold out here in Vernal, but we had a very warm Thanksgiving full of great family, food, and fun. The best way to have Thanksgiving, yes? Husband even got to participate in a little bit of Thursday night Black Friday shopping with my mom and a couple of my siblings. I guess those $2 DVDs at Walmart were a pretty big hit. I stayed home and relaxed instead.

Part of the fun stuff that happened today was watching all of the boys watch a movie. Husband and my two brothers on the couch had a great time. It was fantastic. I love them all.

Last week, I went with my mom to a Relief Society activity where we made this cute craft. I am not a crafty person normally, unless I have a very set pattern that I can follow to the letter.  This gave me a little more freedom than I felt comfortable with, but I think it turned out great. My mom made one, too and hers turned out great. I really love the way mine turned out overall. I wish that I would have had the time and money to make a couple more or one of the other crafts to give for gifts. Maybe next time. :)

I hope you had a marvelous Thanksgiving!!! May you have many reasons to be grateful throughout the next year.

Thankful Day

I love Thanksgiving Day. It's one of my favorite days ever. I love being with family all day and eating good food and the Spirit that is present. Beautiful. Happy. Awesome.

This is a poem by Joseph Auslander that I love:

We thank thee for our daily bread,
For faith by which the soul is fed,
For burdens given us to bear,
For help that lifts the heart's despair.

We thank thee, Lord, for eyes to see,
The truth that makes, and keeps us free:
For faults - and for the strength to mend them,
For dreams - and courage to defend them.

We have so much to thank thee for,
Dear Lord, we beg but one boon more:
Peace in the hearts of all men living,
Peace in the whole world on this Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving. May your day be full of love & happiness.
